How to Write Midjourney Prompts for Beginners: Complete Guide with 50+ Examples

You type 'a beautiful landscape' into Midjourney. The result? Generic and boring. Other people get photorealistic masterpieces with the same tool. The difference is the prompt structure - and it's learnable. Here are 50+ examples that actually work.

How to Write Midjourney Prompts for Beginners: Complete Guide with 50+ Examples You've seen the stunning AI art on Instagram. The photorealistic portraits. The fantasy landscapes that look straight out of a movie. And you want to create them too.

But when you type "a beautiful landscape" into Midjourney, you get... generic, disappointing results that look nothing like what you imagined.

Here's the truth: Writing great Midjourney prompts is a skill. And like any skill, it follows patterns that anyone can learn.

In this complete beginner's guide, you'll learn the exact prompt structure that professional AI artists use. You'll get 50+ proven prompt examples you can copy and modify. And by the end, you'll understand why some prompts create masterpieces while others create mush.

No design background required. No expensive software. Just your words and the right structure.

Let's dive in.

#What Makes a Good Midjourney Prompt?

Before we get to examples, you need to understand how Midjourney "thinks."

Midjourney is an AI trained on millions of images and their descriptions. When you write a prompt, you're not just describing what you want - you're giving the AI a set of instructions about:

- Subject - What is the main focus?

- Style - How should it look? (photorealistic, cartoon, oil painting?)

- Environment - Where is it? What's the setting?

- Lighting - What kind of light? (golden hour, studio lighting, neon?)

- Camera/Quality - Technical specs (8k, macro lens, cinematic)

- Mood - What feeling should it evoke?

The magic happens when you combine these elements in a specific order. Which brings us to...

#The Perfect Midjourney Prompt Formula

After analyzing thousands of successful prompts, here's the structure that works consistently:

[Subject] + [Detailed Description] + [Environment] + [Style] + [Lighting] + [Quality Parameters]

Let's break down each part with examples.

#1. Subject (Required)

Start with exactly what you want to create. Be specific.

❌ Bad: "A person" ✅ Good: "A young woman with curly red hair wearing a leather jacket"

❌ Bad: "A car" ✅ Good: "A vintage 1967 Ford Mustang in racing red"

The more specific your subject, the more control you have over the result.

#2. Detailed Description (Add Character)

Add details that bring your subject to life:

- For people: Age, hair color, clothing, expression, pose

- For objects: Material, condition, color, size

- For scenes: Time of day, weather, season

Example:

"A young woman with curly red hair wearing a leather jacket, confident expression, arms crossed, looking at camera"

#3. Environment (Set the Scene)

Where is your subject? The environment adds context and atmosphere.

Examples:

- "standing in a rainy Tokyo street at night"

- "sitting in a cozy coffee shop with warm lighting"

- "floating in a futuristic space station with Earth visible through window"

#4. Style (Define the Look)

This is where you control the artistic style:

Photorealistic styles:

- "photorealistic, 8k, highly detailed"

- "cinematic, film grain, color grading"

- "professional photography, studio lighting"

Artistic styles:

- "oil painting, impressionist style, visible brush strokes"

- "watercolor painting, soft edges, dreamy atmosphere"

- "digital art, concept art style, vibrant colors"

Retro/Vintage styles:

- "1980s retro wave, neon colors, synthwave aesthetic"

- "vintage photograph, sepia tone, 1950s style"

- "polaroid photo, instant film aesthetic"

#5. Lighting (Create Mood)

Lighting transforms everything:

- "golden hour lighting, warm tones" - Romantic, natural

- "dramatic studio lighting, rim light" - Professional, striking

- "neon lights, cyberpunk atmosphere" - Futuristic, edgy

- "soft diffused lighting, overcast day" - Gentle, even

- "cinematic lighting, volumetric fog" - Movie-like, atmospheric

#6. Quality Parameters (Technical Specs)

End with technical quality markers:

- "8k, highly detailed, sharp focus" - Maximum quality

- "unreal engine 5, octane render" - 3D/game engine look

- "trending on artstation, award-winning" - Artistic quality

- "hyperrealistic, photorealistic" - Realism boost

#Mistake 1: Too Vague

❌ Bad: "A beautiful woman" ✅ Fixed: "Portrait of a young Mediterranean woman, olive skin, dark wavy hair, wearing white linen dress, standing in a sunlit garden, photorealistic, 8k"

#Mistake 2: Conflicting Styles

❌ Bad: "Photorealistic cartoon character in oil painting style" ✅ Fixed: "Pixar-style 3D character, cartoon animation, vibrant colors, soft lighting"

#Mistake 3: Overloading Keywords

❌ Bad: "8k ultra detailed photorealistic masterpiece trending on artstation award-winning best quality sharp focus HDR" ✅ Fixed: "8k, photorealistic, highly detailed" (3-4 quality keywords max)

#Mistake 4: Ignoring Aspect Ratio

Fix: Always add --ar parameter:

- --ar 16:9 for landscapes

- --ar 2:3 for portraits

- --ar 1:1 for social media

- --ar 9:16 for stories

#Mistake 5: No Lighting Specified

❌ Bad: "A house in the mountains" ✅ Fixed: "Mountain cabin, golden hour lighting, warm interior lights visible through windows, dramatic sunset sky"

#Using Weights

Control emphasis with double colons:

red::2 ball, blue::1 ball

(Red ball gets 2x emphasis)

#Multi-Prompts

Blend concepts with ::

ice cream:: cake:: --ar 1:1

#Style References

Use --sref for consistent style:

Your prompt here --sref URL_OF_REFERENCE_IMAGE

#Character Consistency

For same character across multiple images:

Character description, --cref URL_OF_CHARACTER --cw 100

#Your Next Steps

#FAQ

Q: Do I need to memorize all these keywords? A: No! Start with the formula: Subject + Style + Quality. Add more as you get comfortable.

Q: Why do my prompts look different from examples? A: Midjourney changes with updates. Also, the same prompt can produce different results. It's part of the creative process!

Q: How do I get more consistent results? A: Use the --seed parameter to reproduce similar images. Or use --sref for style consistency.

Q: Can I use these prompts in other AI tools? A: Mostly yes! Stable Diffusion and DALL-E understand similar prompts. Some parameters (like --ar) are Midjourney-specific.

#Final Thoughts

Writing great Midjourney prompts isn't about memorizing magic words. It's about learning to communicate clearly to an AI that thinks in associations.

The artists creating stunning AI art aren't using secret prompts. They're using structure - the same structure you now know.

Start with one prompt from this guide. Modify it. Make it yours. And most importantly, have fun exploring what's possible.

Happy prompting!
