Google quietly rolled three AI features into Google Photos this month, and they're genuinely better than tools I've paid for. Here's what 'Help me edit,' 'Create with AI,' and the new 'Ask' button actually do.
Your phone just became a professional photo studio. Google has quietly integrated PromptSpace-the same viral AI model powering Gemini's image generation-directly into Google Photos, bringing three game-changing features that would cost hundreds of dollars with premium editing software. The best part? They're completely free.
Starting February 2026, users across Android and iOS can access "Help me edit" for natural language photo transformations, "Create with AI" for instant themed templates, and an "Ask" button that combines search intelligence with editing capabilities. These aren't gimmicks-they're the result of Google's DeepMind research into character-consistent AI editing.
Meet NanoBanana: Google's Secret Photo Editing Weapon
PromptSpace (officially Gemini 3 Pro Image) gained viral fame for its ability to generate photorealistic images with stunning character consistency. Unlike earlier AI models that would completely alter faces between generations, PromptSpace remembers specific facial features-maintaining recognizable likeness across edits, styles, and scenarios. Now, this same technology lives inside Google Photos. When you edit a photo using the new AI features, the system doesn't just generate a "similar-looking" result. It preserves the actual identity of your subjects, whether they're people, pets, or products.
This breakthrough matters because it solves the biggest problem with AI photo editing: the "uncanny valley" of faces that look almost right but somehow wrong. PromptSpace's character consistency means Grandma still looks like Grandma, even when you transform her casual snapshot into a Renaissance-style oil painting.
Feature 1: Help Me Edit (Natural Language Magic)
The "Help me edit" feature is exactly what it sounds like-and it's magical. Instead of learning complex editing tools, you simply describe what you want in plain English (or use voice input). What You Can Do
Here are real examples that work today:- "Make Corey smile" - Opens closed mouths, adjusts expressions while maintaining exact facial structure
- "Remove the sunglasses" - Reveals eyes naturally, reconstructing what was hidden
- "Brighten the sky and add golden hour lighting" - Transforms flat midday photos into warm, sunset-lit scenes
- "Change the background to a beach" - Teleports subjects while preserving every facial detail
- "Make everyone look at the camera" - Fixes those group photos where someone always blinks
How It Works
The magic happens through Google's private face groups-on-device facial recognition data that Google Photos has been building for years. When you request an edit involving people, PromptSpace references these private groups (not cloud-based AI) to ensure accurate, personalized results. This on-device approach has two major benefits:
- Privacy - Your facial data never leaves your phone for AI processing
- Accuracy - The AI knows exactly what your specific subjects look like from multiple angles
Pro Tips for "Help Me Edit"
The more specific your request, the better the results:❌ "Make this photo better"
❌ "Fix the background"
❌ "Change the style"

- Social media influencers upgrading their content

Professional Headshot
Converts any photo into LinkedIn-ready corporate portraits. The AI:
- Adjusts lighting to flatter facial features
- Applies subtle retouching while maintaining authenticity
- Generates appropriate backgrounds (office, neutral, or gradient)
- Keeps clothing presentable and professional

Coming Soon: Personalized Templates
Google has announced that "Create with AI" will soon support custom templates trained on your photo library. Imagine:- "Birthday party" template that knows your family's party aesthetic
- "Vacation recap" that applies your preferred travel photo style
- "Pet portrait" optimized for your specific dog or cat
When to Use Templates vs. Manual Editing
Use Templates when:- You want fast, predictable results
- You need professional output without prompt engineering
- Creating content for specific use cases (social, business, holidays)
Use "Help me edit" when:
- You have a specific vision in mind
- The templates don't match your needs
- You want to experiment with unique styles
Feature 3: The Ask Button (Search Meets Edit)
The "Ask" button represents the most ambitious of the three features-a conversational interface that understands both what's in your photos and what you might want to do with them.Edit Mode: Conversational Photo Editing
Tap "Ask" and type or speak your editing request. The AI understands context:- "Widen this photo and remove red-eye" - Expands the canvas while fixing specific issues
- "Make this look like a professional food photo" - Applies restaurant-quality styling
- "Add dramatic lighting like a movie poster" - Transforms lighting with cinematic flair
- "Unblur the background and sharpen the dog" - Selective focus adjustments
The system handles multi-part requests that would require multiple steps in traditional editing software.
Search Mode: Content-Aware Photo Discovery
The same "Ask" button searches your library with unprecedented intelligence:- "Find pictures of Maddy in her Halloween costume" - Recognizes specific people in specific contexts
- "Show me photos from the beach vacation last year" - Time + location + content understanding
- "Find receipts from January" - Document recognition with date filtering
- "Pictures where everyone's eyes are open" - Quality-aware filtering
Learning Mode: Identify and Educate
The "Ask" button can also identify subjects and provide information:- Point your camera at a bird, ask "What species is this?"
- Photograph a plant, ask "How do I care for this?"
- Capture a landmark, ask "What's the history of this building?"
This turns Google Photos from a storage app into an intelligent visual assistant.

Google Photos AI vs Paid Alternatives
The real story here is value. These free features compete directly with premium tools:FeatureGoogle Photos (Free)Photoshop AI ($22/month)Luminar Neo ($149/year)Natural language editing✅✅ (Firefly)❌Character consistency✅⚠️ (Variable)❌One-tap templates✅❌✅Face-aware editing✅✅✅Content-aware search✅❌❌Subject identification✅❌❌Storage included15GBCloud extraLocal only The verdict: For most users, Google Photos' free AI features eliminate the need for paid editing software. Professional photographers may still need Photoshop's granular controls, but casual users and content creators get everything they need at zero cost.
1. Fix Group Photo Disasters
The blinked-in-every-photo problem is solved. Select the group shot and ask: "Make sure everyone's eyes are open and smiling." PromptSpace references your face groups to reconstruct natural expressions.2. Professional Headshots from Selfies
No studio? No problem. Upload a well-lit selfie and apply the "Professional Headshot" template. The AI handles background replacement, lighting adjustments, and subtle retouching.3. Holiday Cards Without the Hassle
Family holiday cards used to require scheduling photographers and coordinating outfits. Now, snap casual photos throughout the year, then use "Create with AI" to generate cohesive, festive cards in minutes.4. Pet Portrait Perfection
PromptSpace's character consistency works on pets too. Generate artistic renderings of your dog or cat that actually look like your specific pet, not just "a golden retriever."5. Social Media Content Calendars
Content creators can batch-process photos with consistent aesthetics. Apply the same template across multiple images for cohesive Instagram grids or LinkedIn post images.6. Product Photography on a Budget
Small business owners can transform smartphone product photos into professional e-commerce images. Remove distracting backgrounds, adjust lighting, and create consistent product catalogs.7. Memory Preservation
Old photos with damage or fading? Ask the AI to "restore this photo" and watch as scratches disappear, colors revitalize, and clarity improves-without losing the vintage character.8. Creative Family Projects
Turn your family into Renaissance paintings, comic book heroes, or watercolor portraits. The character consistency means everyone remains recognizable, making these perfect for unique gifts.9. Event Documentation
Capture an event candidly, then use AI to enhance select shots for sharing. The "Ask" feature can find your best photos automatically: "Show me the most dramatic shots from the concert."10. Educational Visual Aids
Teachers and students can transform photos into educational materials. Ask the AI to "explain what's happening in this science experiment photo" or "create a diagram from this image."Privacy and Data: What Happens to Your Photos?
With great AI power comes great privacy responsibility. Here's what Google has disclosed about the new features:On-Device Processing
Face recognition and analysis for "Help me edit" happens on your device using existing face groups. Your facial data isn't sent to Google's servers for AI training.Optional Cloud AI
Some advanced features may use cloud processing, but Google states that:- Photos aren't used to train generative AI models
- Cloud processing is encrypted
- You can opt out of AI features in settings
What This Means for You
Your photos remain yours. The AI features are tools, not data collection mechanisms. This is a significant differentiator from some third-party AI editing apps that reserve rights to use your uploads for training. The Future of AI Photo Editing
Google Photos' PromptSpace integration signals a broader shift: AI photo editing is becoming a standard feature, not a premium add-on. As these models improve and rollout completes, expect:- Video editing with the same natural language interface
- Real-time editing as you shoot (in the Camera app)
- Cross-device consistency between Photos, Gemini, and third-party apps
- More templates for specific niches and use cases
The democratization of professional-grade editing means content quality barriers are dropping. The differentiator won't be access to tools-it'll be creative vision and how you use them.
Conclusion: Why This Matters
Google Photos' free AI upgrades represent more than new features-they're a statement about the future of creative tools. By embedding PromptSpace's character-consistent editing into a free app used by billions, Google is:- Democratizing professional photography
- Eliminating technical barriers to quality editing
- Setting a new standard for what free software can do
For users, this means professional results without professional costs. For the industry, it means adaptation or obsolescence for paid editing tools that can't justify their price tags against "good enough" free alternatives.
If you haven't checked your Google Photos app lately, do it now. The future of photo editing is already here-and it didn't cost you a dime.
