Free AI Image Upscaler — Enhance Resolution to 4K and Beyond
Upscale low-resolution images to 4K, 8K, and beyond using AI super-resolution. Free, no signup, no watermark. Works on photos, AI-generated art, scans, screenshots, vintage images, and more.
Upscaling is one of those tasks where AI absolutely outperforms classical algorithms — bicubic and Lanczos resampling produce blurry, soft output above 2x, while AI super-resolution models (Real-ESRGAN, ESRGAN, SwinIR) reconstruct details that look genuinely sharp at 4x and beyond. Our free AI upscaler runs Real-ESRGAN under the hood, the current state-of-the-art open-source super-resolution model.
The tool handles every common case: AI-generated 1024x1024 images upscaled to 4096x4096 for poster printing, low-res phone photos enhanced for social media, old family scans restored to a usable resolution, screenshots upscaled for print, vintage photos and damaged images repaired through inferred detail.
Where AI upscaling shines: photos with clear subjects (faces, objects, landscapes), AI-generated art, illustrations and digital paintings, line art, logos and graphics. Where it struggles: extremely noisy or compressed source images (the AI amplifies the noise), text in images (often corrupts at high upscale factors), and photos with severe motion blur (no algorithm recovers from this).
For best results, start with the highest-quality source you have. Upscaling a 200x200 thumbnail to 4K will produce inferred detail that looks plausible but is not real. Upscaling a 1024x1024 image to 2048x2048 reproduces every fine detail in genuinely sharp form. Pick the smallest upscale factor that meets your target resolution.
How it works
Three steps to upscale any image:
- 1. Upload your source image. JPG, PNG, WebP all supported. No upload size limit, but smaller sources upscale faster.
- 2. Pick an upscale factor. 2x, 3x, or 4x. Use the smallest factor that meets your target resolution — quality is best at 2x.
- 3. Download the upscaled result. Output appears in 10-30 seconds depending on source size. Right-click to save the high-resolution PNG.
Who uses this tool
AI art print preparation
Take 1024x1024 FLUX or Midjourney output and upscale to 4K-8K for poster, canvas, or framed print.
Old photo restoration
Family photo scans, vintage prints, school photos — upscale and sharpen for digital archiving.
Low-resolution stock images
Salvage low-res images from the early internet for use in modern projects.
Social media at high quality
Upscale phone photos and screenshots for Instagram's high-resolution feed and TikTok 4K uploads.
Print-on-demand products
Meet Redbubble, TeePublic, Etsy resolution requirements (typically 4500x4500+ for stickers, 8000x8000+ for posters).
Video frame extraction
Pull a frame from a video, upscale 4x, use as a high-resolution still.
Why use the PromptSpace version
- Real-ESRGAN model. Current state-of-the-art open-source super-resolution. Outperforms most paid alternatives.
- No watermark on output. Many free upscalers add a watermark or quality cap — ours does not.
- Fast turnaround. 10-30 seconds for typical inputs, vs minutes for some local Real-ESRGAN setups.
- No file size limit. Unlike most free tools that cap at 5MB, we accept any reasonable input size.
Pro tips for better results
Pick the smallest upscale factor that works
Quality at 2x is excellent; at 3x very good; at 4x noticeable inferred detail. If you need 4096x4096 from a 1024x1024 source, 4x is fine — but for a 2000x2000 source, 2x to 4000x4000 is sharper than 4x to 8000x8000.
Start with the highest-quality source
AI cannot recover detail that was never there. A 200x200 thumbnail upscaled 4x is inferred detail; a 1000x1000 source upscaled 4x reproduces real detail.
Avoid upscaling already-upscaled images
Compounding upscale passes amplifies any artifacts from the first pass. Upscale once at the right factor instead of stacking 2x passes.
Text in images can corrupt
AI super-resolution sometimes warps text. For documents and screenshots with critical text, use traditional OCR + retypesetting instead.
Compress before sharing on web
Upscaled output is uncompressed — typically 10-50MB. Run through TinyPNG or Squoosh before web upload to keep file sizes reasonable.
Frequently asked questions
What model does the upscaler use?
Real-ESRGAN — the current state-of-the-art open-source super-resolution model. Specifically the RealESRGAN_x4plus weights, which are trained on a wide mix of photos and illustrations.
How much can I upscale?
2x, 3x, and 4x are the supported factors. For higher upscales (8x, 16x), run two passes — but quality degrades on each pass, so keep upscaling minimal.
Will the upscaler work on AI-generated images?
Yes — and AI-generated images are actually one of the best inputs because they typically have clean subject definition and no noise or compression artifacts.
Is there a file size limit?
No hard limit, but very large sources (>20MB or >5000x5000 pixels) take longer to process. We recommend pre-resizing extremely large sources before upscaling.
Is the tool really free?
Yes — no signup, no watermark, no resolution cap on output. Supported by display advertising elsewhere on the site.
Can I upscale photos of people without artifacts?
Real-ESRGAN preserves faces well at 2x and 3x. At 4x, very small faces in source images may show slight distortion — for portrait-heavy work, 2x is the safest factor.
Do you store my uploaded images?
No. Images are processed in-memory and not retained on our servers after the response is delivered.
