#Why You Cannot React Faster Than 150 ms

1. Sleep. Sleep debt is the single biggest destroyer of reaction time. One night of 6 hours instead of 8 adds 30–80 ms to your reflex. Elite gamers treat sleep like a piece of equipment — because it is.
2. Moderate caffeine. 100–200 mg (one strong coffee) sharpens reactions for about 2 hours. More is worse — jitters degrade precision without helping speed.
3. Fast-twitch games. Rhythm games (Osu!, Beat Saber), competitive shooters (Valorant, CS2), and click-reflex trainers (Aim Lab) all train the same visual-motor loop this test measures.
4. Warm up. Cold hands are slow hands. Two minutes of shaking your hands out, rolling your wrists, and doing 10 practice reactions before a real attempt raises your peak.
5. Fix your gaze on the centre. Do not dart your eyes waiting for the change. Peripheral vision detects the flash faster than saccadic vision, so a fixed centre gaze is optimal.
6. Do not anticipate. Trying to predict the flash creates false starts, which most reaction tests penalize with a +200 ms penalty. Stay calm; let the stimulus trigger your reflex.
7. Report the median, not the best. Reaction time varies attempt-to-attempt. One outlier can hide your real reflex. Take at least five clean attempts and report the median.
