The resume you spent three weeks polishing gets a seven-second look from a recruiter — and if you’re also on the job market for creative roles, see our best AI prompts for realistic photos for portfolio-grade output. Roughly two of those seconds go to your name, four to your title, and one to your photo. If the photo is a cropped wedding selfie or a shadowy webcam frame, you already lost the interview — before the recruiter read a single bullet point. Most people don't need better resumes. They need a better photo, and they need it today, not next weekend when a photographer is free.
This guide gives you 35 copy-paste AI headshot prompts built specifically for resumes, job applications, and executive bios — not LinkedIn casual, not Tinder polished, but the specific "hire this person" energy that hiring managers respond to. Every prompt is tested on FLUX 1.1, Midjourney v7, and ChatGPT image mode. Author: PromptSpace.
Why Resume Photos Are Different From LinkedIn Photos
A LinkedIn photo is a personal brand asset — it can be warm, approachable, a little quirky. A resume photo is a legal-document photo. Recruiters scanning 200 applications a day want three things from the image: face clearly visible, dress code matches the industry, background does not distract. That's it. Anything else is friction.
The three biggest resume-photo mistakes I see people make with AI generators:
- Over-styled portraits. Cinematic lighting with a strong side-key looks great on Instagram, terrible on a resume. Recruiters read it as "trying too hard."
- Wrong dress code. A tech resume photo in a full three-piece suit signals you don't understand the culture. A finance resume in a t-shirt signals you don't respect the role.
- Distracting backgrounds. Bokeh coffee shops, cityscapes, gradient studios — anything that pulls the eye away from your face costs you.
Pro Tip: The resume photo standard is: plain neutral background, sharp face, dress one notch above the industry norm. Match that with any of the prompts below and you're 90% of the way there.
Dress Code Rules by Industry (Before You Prompt)
Before picking a prompt, pick the dress code that matches your target role. The prompts below reference these categories directly.
| Industry | Dress Code | Background | Expression |
|---|---|---|---|
| Finance / Consulting / Law | Dark suit, white shirt, muted tie/no tie | Neutral grey or warm off-white | Confident, slight smile |
| Tech / Startups | Blazer over crew neck OR button-up no tie | Soft grey, warm white | Approachable, natural smile |
| Corporate (F500) | Suit or blazer + shirt | Muted blue-grey or seamless white | Professional, neutral |
| Healthcare / Academic | White coat / blazer + shirt | Clean white or soft blue | Warm, trustworthy |
| Creative / Media | Blazer + interesting texture (tweed, knit) | Warm neutral, gentle depth | Personable, slight character |
The Anatomy of a Great Resume Prompt
Every prompt below follows the same skeleton — remember it and you can build unlimited variants for any role:
[Subject descriptor], professional headshot for resume, [dress code], [background], [lighting], [framing], [expression], photorealistic, high detail, shot on 85mm f/1.8, [aspect ratio]
Change one variable at a time and regenerate. If the face doesn't quite look right, keep everything the same and swap only the lighting phrase — you'll be surprised how much that alone changes.

Did You Know? Applications with a professional-looking resume photo get 2.4× more callback rates in regions where photos are standard (India, Germany, Japan, France, and most of continental Europe). In the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, resumes generally should not include a photo — but LinkedIn absolutely should. Adjust based on your target country.
Which AI Tool Should You Actually Use?
All 35 prompts above work on the three major image generators, but each has strengths for headshots:
| Tool | Best For | Cost | Face Consistency |
|---|---|---|---|
| FLUX 1.1 Pro | Sharpest realism, best skin texture | ~$0.05 per image | Excellent with face ref |
| Midjourney v7 | Best lighting artistry, editorial polish | $10/mo Basic plan | Good with sref |
| ChatGPT Plus image mode | Fastest iteration, no learning curve | $20/mo | Moderate |
For a resume you'll actually submit: FLUX 1.1 Pro on PromptSpace's AI Image Generator. It's free, no signup, and produces the sharpest face detail of any current model. Upload a reference photo of yourself to lock in likeness.
The 3-Step Workflow (From Selfie to Resume-Ready)
- Reference photo prep. Take 3 selfies in bright natural light — front-facing, slight left turn, slight right turn. Neutral expression. This gives the AI face-reference material.
- Prompt + regenerate. Pick a prompt above matching your target role. Generate 4 variants. Regenerate the best variant with subtle tweaks (change "warm smile" to "closed-mouth smile" if teeth look off, change "3:4" to "4:5" if you need more headroom).
- Post-process. Crop tight (top of head to mid-chest), export at 400×500px for resume, 1080×1080 for LinkedIn. Slight sharpening on eyes. Done.
What This Won't Fix
AI headshots are excellent for a professional-appearing photo when you can't hire a photographer. They will not fix:
- A resume with real content problems. A great photo on a weak resume just makes rejection faster.
- Face-based ATS matching. Some Chinese and Japanese systems match ID photos against submitted headshots — an AI-generated face will fail.
- Executive-level bio pages. If you're applying for C-suite or partner roles at F500, invest in a real photographer. The ROI is 100:1.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are AI-generated resume photos ethical?
Yes, as long as the photo represents you accurately. Using an AI headshot that shows your real face, real hair, and real skin tone — just cleanly presented — is no different from using a photographer's studio portrait. What crosses the line: significant slimming, drastically changing hair or age, or generating a face that isn't yours.
Will recruiters know it's AI?
Modern AI headshots on FLUX 1.1 or Midjourney v7 are indistinguishable from professional studio portraits when done well. The giveaways are usually accidental: too-symmetric faces, unnatural background bokeh, or over-smooth skin. Following the framing rules in this guide avoids all three.
Do I need photos on my US resume?
No — US, UK, Canadian, and Australian resumes should not include photos due to anti-discrimination hiring laws. But your LinkedIn profile absolutely should have one, and the same prompts here work for both. If you're applying to companies in India, Germany, France, Japan, or most of continental Europe, photos are standard and expected.
What resolution should the final photo be?
For a resume: 400×500px at 300 DPI (roughly 1.3"×1.7" printed). For LinkedIn: 1080×1080px square. For an ATS-parsed resume, keep the file under 200KB to avoid upload issues. Save as JPEG with quality 85 — headshots don't need PNG.
Can I use the same photo for LinkedIn and my resume?
Yes, and you should — consistency across your applications actually helps recall. The only reason to have two versions: a tighter crop for LinkedIn (more face) and a slightly wider crop for resume (more shoulders). Same base image, different framing.
How many generations before I get a good one?
On FLUX 1.1 Pro with a good reference photo, you'll typically get one keeper in 4–6 generations (~2 minutes). Without a reference, expect 15–20 generations to get face likeness right. The reference photo step is worth the two minutes of setup.
Should I smile in a resume photo?
Slight closed-mouth smile is the safest choice for 90% of industries. Full teeth-showing smile works for sales, HR, and creative roles. Neutral expression works for finance, law, and academia. When in doubt, go closed-mouth smile with warm eyes — never fully unsmiling, never grinning.
What if I need multiple outfit variants for different applications?
Use the same reference photo across all prompts and only change the "dress code" and "background" variables. This gives you a consistent-looking face across a suit shot, a smart-casual shot, and a business-casual shot — exactly what you want when applying to different industry types in the same week.
