Midjourney v6 represents a massive leap in photorealism. With improved face generation, natural skin texture, and cinematic lighting control, creating portrait photographs indistinguishable from real photos is now possible without owning a camera. This collection of 50 tested prompts at https://www.promptspace.in/images?category=portrait gives you copy-ready prompts that consistently produce stunning results.
How to use these prompts: copy any prompt below. Open Midjourney in Discord or the web interface. Type /imagine and paste the prompt. For best results with portraits, add --ar 2:3 for a vertical portrait aspect ratio, --style raw for maximum photorealism, and --stylize 0 to reduce Midjourney's artistic interpretation. Use --cref [image URL] to maintain character consistency across multiple generations.
Midjourney v6 excels at portraits because its training dataset heavily features human faces. The model understands lighting vocabulary (Rembrandt lighting, golden hour, overcast diffuse light), camera parameters (85mm f/1.4, shallow depth of field), and photography styles (editorial, commercial, documentary, fine art). Using this vocabulary in your prompts gives Midjourney precise instructions rather than vague descriptions.
Prompt 1: Editorial portrait of a 28-year-old woman with warm terracotta skin, natural textured hair, wearing a cream linen blazer, shot on Hasselblad medium format, 80mm f/2.8, soft window light from the left, shallow depth of field, slight film grain, editorial magazine style. What it produces: a refined fashion-editorial-style headshot with exquisite skin texture detail. Tip: replace 'linen blazer' with any garment to change the styling direction.
Prompt 2: Cinematic portrait of an elderly fisherman with weathered face, deep wrinkles, silver beard, wearing a faded cable-knit sweater, harbour in the soft background bokeh, overcast coastal light, shot on Leica M11 35mm f/2, colour graded with slight cyan shadows and warm highlights, photojournalism style. What it produces: an emotionally resonant character portrait with extraordinary texture detail. Tip: --style raw makes the aged skin render with remarkable accuracy.
Prompt 3: Corporate headshot of a 35-year-old South Asian man in a navy blue suit, confident expression, professional smile, clean white studio background, three-point studio lighting, catchlights in eyes, shot on Canon R5 85mm f/1.2, ultra-sharp focus on eyes, professional LinkedIn headshot quality. Tip: this format works for any nationality and profession — change the suit colour and background to match the industry.
Prompt 4: Beauty portrait of a woman applying red lipstick, extreme close-up on lips and jawline, dramatic side lighting, skin pores visible, shot on Canon 100mm macro f/2.8, high contrast black and white with deep shadows, beauty advertising campaign style. What it produces: a moody, high-fashion beauty shot suitable for cosmetics brand advertising.
Prompt 5: Environmental portrait of a 40-year-old female architect studying blueprints on a modern construction site, wearing a hard hat and blazer, golden hour backlighting, warm dust particles in the air, shot on Sony A7IV 50mm f/1.8, documentary photography style, authentic candid moment. Tip: environmental portraits work best when the background context tells a story — match the setting to the subject's profession.
For all portrait prompts, quality boosters that consistently improve results include: 'intricate skin texture detail', 'catchlights in eyes', 'natural sub-surface scattering', 'film grain at 1600 ISO'. These trigger Midjourney's photorealism mode and produce more convincing results than adding 'photorealistic' alone. Negative prompt strategies for v6 portraits: use --no blurry, plastic skin, airbrushed, overprocessed, cartoon, illustration, painting, distorted eyes, extra fingers. Midjourney v6 handles hands and eyes much better than v5 but can still struggle with extreme close-ups. If you get distorted features, add --no asymmetrical eyes, distorted proportions to your prompt.
Lighting vocabulary that transforms portrait quality: 'Rembrandt lighting' (triangular light patch under one eye), 'butterfly lighting' (shadow under the nose), 'split lighting' (half face in shadow), 'golden hour backlight' (warm rim light from behind), 'overcast ambient light' (flat, even, natural light). Each produces a completely different mood from the same subject description.
Frequently asked questions: Can I use these portraits commercially? Midjourney allows commercial use on paid plans (Basic plan and above). Always check Midjourney's current terms of service for the latest policy. Do these prompts work with Midjourney v5.2? Yes, though v6 produces noticeably more photorealistic faces. Upgrade to v6 by adding --v 6 at the end of any prompt.

It's also important to proofread your prompts for clarity and consistency to ensure the AI interprets them correctly.
For advanced variations, try incorporating negative prompts to exclude unwanted features or using weight adjustments to emphasize certain aspects of the portrait. Layering multiple prompts or blending styles can also produce unique hybrid results that push the boundaries of realism. Additionally, experimenting with Midjourney's new parameters like aspect ratio, quality, and stylization can further refine your portraits.
Another technique involves combining Midjourney prompts with external tools such as image upscalers or photo editors to enhance the final output. Post-processing can correct minor imperfections or add finishing touches that elevate the portrait's realism. Integrating these workflows allows for greater creative control and professional-quality results.
