Skills for Claude Pro Users (No Claude Code Required)

Skills aren't just for terminal users. Claude Pro subscribers can upload and use skills directly in the browser. Here's how to get started.

Most guides about SKILL.md skills assume you're using Claude Code in a terminal. But skills also work for OpenClaw, Claude Pro, Team, and Enterprise users in the browser at claude.ai. No terminal, no command line, no developer tools required.

If you're a writer, researcher, analyst, or anyone who uses Claude through the web interface, skills can make your experience significantly better.

Quick Answer: Claude Pro users can enable skills in the browser by navigating to Settings > Capabilities to enable "Code execution and file creation," and then to Customize > Skills to toggle on built-in skills or upload custom skill files (zip or SKILL.md).

How skills work in the browser

In Claude Code, skills live in a folder on your computer. In the browser, skills are uploaded through the settings panel. The effect is the same: Claude gets specialized instructions for specific tasks and applies them when relevant.

Setting up skills in claude.ai

  1. Go to Settings > Capabilities and make sure "Code execution and file creation" is enabled. Skills require this to function.
  1. Go to Customize > Skills in the sidebar.
  1. You'll see Anthropic's built-in skills (document creation, spreadsheets, etc.). Toggle on any that are useful for your work.
  1. To add a custom skill, click "Upload" and select a skill zip file or SKILL.md file.
  1. The skill appears in your skills list. Toggle it on to activate.

That's it. When you chat with Claude and your request matches a skill's description, Claude loads the skill and follows its instructions.

Skills that work well without code

Not every skill requires a terminal or coding environment. These categories work great in the browser:

Writing and editing. Skills that improve Claude's writing output: matching a specific tone, following a style guide, structuring documents in a particular format, or applying brand guidelines.

Research and analysis. Skills that teach Claude how to analyze specific types of data, produce structured reports, or apply analytical frameworks.

Document creation. Skills that help Claude produce better presentations, spreadsheets, reports, and PDFs. The built-in Anthropic document skills are a good starting point.

Content repurposing. Skills that take one piece of content and adapt it for different platforms, audiences, or formats.

Job applications. A skill with your CV, target roles, and formatting preferences can make Claude consistently produce tailored cover letters and application materials.

Finding skills for non-developers

Most skills on marketplaces are developer-focused, but the format works for any domain. On Agensi, check the productivity category for general-purpose skills.

You can also create your own. A skill is just a text file with instructions. If you can describe your workflow in clear steps, you can create a skill. See How to Create Your Own SKILL.md for the full process. The tutorial uses terminal commands for creating files, but you can write the SKILL.md in any text editor and upload it through the browser.

Tips for browser users

Start with one skill. Don't upload a dozen at once. Pick the task you do most often with Claude and find or create a skill for it.

Be explicit in your prompts. In the browser, you can reference skills by name: "Use my brand guidelines skill to write this email." This helps Claude pick the right skill when you have several active.

Check built-in skills first. Anthropic's document creation skills (for Word docs, PDFs, spreadsheets, and presentations) are well-built and free. Make sure they're toggled on before looking for third-party alternatives.

Browse skills on the Agensi marketplace or read the complete guide to SKILL.md to understand the format.
